Why Is Travel Medical & Expat Insurance Essential?

Standard travel insurance only covers short trips (typically 30–60 days).
When living abroad, you may no longer be covered by Social Security or your home country’s equivalent.
Medical care can be extremely expensive abroad — private hospitals may require upfront payment.

Important Coverage Information You Should Know

Destination Selection

  • Your “primary destination” should be where you will spend most of your time (outside your home country).
  • Even if you select one country, you are still fully covered worldwide.
  • If you plan to visit the USA, you must select USA coverage upfront.

Time Outside the USA

  • You must spend at least six months out of any 12-month period outside the U.S. for worldwide coverage to remain active.
  • Time outside doesn’t have to be consecutive.

Home Country Suspensions (e.g., Australia)

  • time spent back in your home country (like Australia) suspends your coverage temporarily — it resumes once you leave again.
  • The suspended time does not extend the overall 12-month policy period.

Family Members

If only one family member returns home while others remain abroad, coverage continues for those overseas.

Medical Evacuation

  • Emergency evacuation is covered if local facilities can’t treat you adequately.
  • Evacuations typically go to the nearest suitable hospital, or home if medically necessary.
  • “Reunion benefits” may allow a family member to join you after evacuation for support.

Co-Payments and Networks

  • Choose $0 deductible to avoid co-pays globally.
    – In the U.S., in-network providers (PPO) allow cashless treatment.
  • Outside the U.S., you may need to pay upfront and claim reimbursement unless using a partner hospital.
